I think someone is trying to put me off going to Southern Dunes. They have told me that it was overrun with Aligators and mosquitos this year and that it is particularly bad in August when i want to go. Can anyone comment on this at please?

Hi Ginger,

I'm not familiar with Southern Dunes myself, but I find it very hard to believe.  Your villa will have a screen around the pool just like any other which will help with bugs and i've been to Orlando many times and have yet to see a gator.

Please don't worry I think someone must be pulling your leg!

You'll have a wonderful time - I'm sure.  Elaine

We to think someone must be joking with you.

My son and hubby dream of seeing a gator, they are around everywhere it is Florida, but dont know of anyone who has seen them. We have been going to Florida for years and years, we have been told to look around the lakes.

Southern Dunes is one of the most sort after communitys, you will have a great holiday there.

I too think someone is having you on - winding you up!!  We have never seen an alligator in any of the lakes up in Orlando.  The only time we have seen them is whilst staying in Rotonda, on the gulf coast.  They have several swimming up and down their canals - its lovely to see them whilst you are sitting sunning yourself on the pool deck inside the cage.  They aren't very big - apparently once they reach a certain size they are taken down to the Everglades.

Please dont worry about it - just go and enjoy yourself.

Christine

In the whole time I have been visiting Florida I have never seen an aligator on the community where my home is.

Even when I visited the local  State  Park with large lakes I did not see one.

Almost all homes have screens so this keeps the bugs out and it is just like at home
(assuming you are from the UK )  in summer, you put repellant on if you are out and about. But I must say mosquitos have not been an issue when I have been in Florida.

We have twice taken the road from Miami airport to Naples called Aligator Alley. Each time despite looking really carefully have not seen one.

hi

Due to the screening around the pools you can sit out at night even with a light on and have no problems with bugs - unlike the UK in summer !.

We have been lucky enough to see one gator in Orlando, but it was at the edge of a lake in a park - not near houses, and I think it was more frightened of us than we were of it !!

Don't worry and have a great holiday

Sue

Hi Ginger,

First of all welcome to the forum - keep in contact with us all and you will get all sorts of information because as you see above we are a friendly gang.

Take absolutely no notice of what this person has told you - it is utter rubbish. My villa is not on Southern Dunes but I know it quite well. I am sure that no one would use the golf course there if what you have been told is correct. Almost every lake in Florida now has at least one alligator. Ignore them and they will ignore you. Florida is tropical and has a wide variety of wild life, most of which is highly protected, and it is illegal to feed almost all forms of wild life to stop them becomming "humamised". It is rare to have mosquitoes unless there are groups of trees around and the many body sprays available are very effective. Responsible villa owners have their homes treated monthly inside as well as outside with an anti-bug chemical which is perfectly safe to all humans. You will also have a screen around the pool to keep out the bugs.

Please don't worry about it and have a wonderful vacation, which I am sure you will enjoy.

Mike and Kath.

I have stayed in Southern Dunes, and I can assure you that I have never seen an Aligator and as everyone says the pools are screened from the bugs.

Very nice golf at Southern Dunes and the community is right next to Wal-mart and a brilliant restaurant called Manny Chophouse.

The poor old gator does not deserve its bad press; from 1901 to 1999 only 2 people were killed by alligators in Florida.

Now hippos i Africa are a different thing; I used to know the stats for humans killed by hippos and it is pretty astounding!

Have a great time, Ginger and as Mike says, keep in touch with the forum; between us we have an awesome amount of Florida knowledge that we are dying to share!

Ginger - you may see an alligator at Gatorland or if you visit the Boggy Creek Airboat Rides, but we have never seen one outside these on our visits either, and our home is set around a lake. I have had a couple of mossie bites when out and about, but no more than the odd gnat bite I get in the UK. Don't worry, and enjoy your stay - and Mannys yum, one not to miss
